About Dr ap Dafydd

Dr Derfel ap Dafydd is a consultant radiologist at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust - one of the world's leading cancer centres - where he has practised since his consultant appointment in 2016. He has a special interest in imaging of the head and neck and of the urological system, and works across the Trust's Chelsea, Sutton and Cavendish Square sites.

He obtained his medical degree (MB BCh) at Cardiff University in 2005, having also completed a first-class intercalated BSc in Medical Genetics as an undergraduate. He gained membership of the Royal Colleges of Surgeons and Physicians (MRCS, MRCP) during his early postgraduate training at Barts and the Royal London, before completing his radiology training at Imperial and subspecialty training in oncological imaging at the Royal Marsden. He also holds a PhD.

Dr ap Dafydd is the imaging lead for the Royal Marsden's Head and Neck unit and Renal unit, and performs ultrasound-guided biopsies of the neck and of soft tissue sarcomas. He has been on the GMC Specialist Register for clinical radiology since 2014 and is a GMC-recognised trainer.

He previously served as Training Programme Director and educational lead for the Royal Marsden Radiology Training Programme (stepping down in 2025), and is Associate Honorary Faculty at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). He is also the principal trial radiologist for the Head and Neck and Renal research units, with active research interests in intra-oral ultrasound-guided Trans-oral Robotic Surgery, ultrasound-guided intra-tumoral injection of immunotherapy, and post-radiotherapy MRI evaluation of the prostate and pelvic floor.

Dr ap Dafydd combines the breadth of a tertiary cancer-centre radiologist with focused subspecialty depth in head and neck, thyroid and urological imaging, underpinned by hands-on image-guided intervention and an active research portfolio.

Head & Neck Imaging

Imaging lead for the Royal Marsden Head and Neck unit. Subspecialty expertise in the CT, MRI and ultrasound assessment of tumours of the salivary glands, oral cavity, pharynx, larynx and cervical lymph nodes, including tumour staging, treatment response and post-treatment surveillance.

Urological (Prostate & Kidney) Imaging

Imaging lead for the Royal Marsden Renal unit. Specialist MRI of the prostate and kidneys for the detection, characterisation and staging of urological cancers, including post-radiotherapy MRI evaluation of the prostate and pelvic floor.

Thyroid Imaging

Ultrasound and cross-sectional imaging of the thyroid and neck, with ultrasound-guided fine-needle aspiration and biopsy to characterise thyroid nodules and neck lumps and to guide management.

Oncological Imaging

Fellowship-trained in oncological imaging at the Royal Marsden. Expert interpretation of cancer imaging across diagnosis, staging, treatment-response assessment and long-term surveillance in a dedicated cancer-centre setting.

Image-Guided Biopsy & Intervention

Performs ultrasound-guided aspiration and biopsy of the neck and thyroid and of soft tissue sarcomas, alongside intra-oral ultrasound - obtaining accurate tissue diagnosis to direct treatment.

Research & Clinical Trials

Principal trial radiologist for the Head and Neck and Renal research units, with active research in intra-oral ultrasound-guided Trans-oral Robotic Surgery, ultrasound-guided intra-tumoral immunotherapy injection, and post-radiotherapy prostate and pelvic-floor MRI.
